The Rockhampton community has been putting effort into supporting a love of reading in the neighbourhood. Some street libraries are popping up in front of busy streets, awaiting passers-by to take a book or more. Here is a list of street libraries that you can find around Rockhampton.
Edenbrook Park Library
Located on 19 Edenbrook Drive, Parkhurst, this street library is nestled amongst established trees and beside the playground. The Edenbrook Park Library provides a great spot to share books as well as read a book under the shade of the tree canopies.
The Edenbrook Park Library was officially unveiled on 17 March 2019. To celebrate the library opening, local author Pam Garven did a book reading and there were cupcakes and cookies and lots of excitement about the new place to exchange books!
Take Me Home, Wandal Road
Located on 81 Wandal Road, Wandal, this street library is not a place to share books but also magazines, games, toys, seeds, non-perishable food and other useful stuff. Take Me Home Wandal street library exists to share resources of all kinds with our immediate community. In a hectic, complicated world where so many of us are super busy and don't necessarily have time to build neighbourly relationships, this street library provides media to connect with people in the community. It's just a small step towards building a more engaged, compassionate society. Take what you need, leave what you can and share the love in the neighbourhood.
Myrah Cottage Street Library
Located on 118 Clifton Street, Berserker, this "Alice in Wonderland" inspired street library is nestled amongst greenery and caters for all readers - young, old and young at heart. Kendra Davey, a local year 12 student, has done the amazing artwork and made this street library even more amazing. Pop into Myrah Cottage Street library, you might even find some fresh produce here.
Lucas Street Libary
Located on 44 Lucas Street Berserker, this street library has a range of books from children's books to adult books, magazines, DVDs even library bags. You just never know what you may find here.
Frenchville State School Street Library
There are two street libraries located on 456 Geordie Street, Frenchville. These Street Libraries were purchased through 2021 Student Council Fundraising at Frenchville State School. Student Council then ran a design competition to decorate the street library and one of their gorgeous Prep teacher, Mrs Tricia Williams, combined the students' design ideas into this gorgeous interpretation.
At Frenchville State School, the students realise that books will take them on amazing adventures of discovery and learning. The students also want to share their love of reading with the community. This library also offers the school community the opportunity to continue to read and exchange books during weekends and holidays when the school library is closed.
You can join in and support these street libraries by donating books that you are willing to share with the community. Pop into one of these street libraries while you were around the neighbourhood, take a book, drop off a book and let you go places while reading a book.
