There are a lot of street food options in Colombo. No reservations required - as you walk the busy streets, there are several roadside boutique-style restaurants from which you can buy food. Colombo has so much of diversity, therefore don't miss the opportunity to munch on those tasty bites.

Kiribath (Milk Rice)

Milk Rice is a traditional breakfast meal for all Sri Lankans. It's made from cooking rice with coconut milk. Furthermore, I love to eat milk rice with lime pickle or hot chilli paste mixed with Maldive dried fish. It's a real delight. Moreover, it can be a heavy breakfast and allows you to have a late lunch.

Egg Roti

This is my favourite - I love egg roti for various reasons. It's made from dough and egg. This yummy dish should be eaten warm with fish or chicken curry. Trust me on this one, every bite is tasty and you start craving for more. The egg roti is a filling meal - make sure not to eat more than two at a time as too many eggs and roti toasted on oil will increase your cholesterol consumption.

Egg Hoppers

This is an egg pancake, with a very thin, crunchy crust. It's made from fermented rice flour and sprinkled pepper. Its a favourite among foreign tourists. The egg hopper is a light meal compared to the egg roti. Make sure to eat the egg hopper with some katta sambol (Maldive fish hot chilli paste).

Koti Roti

The kottu roti has become a traditional dinner option for many Sri Lankans and tourists alike. It's certainly a heavy meal, but it's too delicious to miss out. It's made from sliced special roti, mixed with vegetables, egg and a meat of your choice. Kottu Roti is available at most roadside restaurants in Colombo. It is freshly made right in front of you and served hot.
