Launched by Project Five, 2009 was the year Australia saw its first ever auction dedicated solely to contemporary street art. It was curated and co-presented by AMBUSH Gallery and Cockle Bay Wharf. Volume 1 was a 3 day public live painting event followed by an intense bidding war at the auction hosted by Darling Park. It hit the right note igniting curiosity and delight from Sydney's public and aMBUSH Gallery discovered unexplored potential for the development of contemporary Australian street art. The event also promoted the legitimacy of street art and dissolved the barriers between artist and audience.
Roll on 2014 and Project 5 is presenting Volume 6, but not before picking up an Australia Council National AbaF Award in the category of Young and Emerging Artists in 2011. Attracting over 50,000 attendees and over $1.5 million in national and metropolitan press over the first four volumes, all proceeds from the last 5 auctions are dedicated to the Information and Cultural Exchange's (ICE) digital arts program.
Now established as Australia's longest running contemporary street art project, Volume 6 will bring together 4 of the freshest talents in Australian and New Zealand street art from the studio to the outdoors and they will create tomorrow's most collectible pieces 'LIVE'.
Volume 6 promises to be high energy with a weekend of 'live' art events, a month long public art exhibition, a series of kid's urban art workshops and an art auction for charity at Sydney's cultural hub Darling Quarter as an associated Art & About Sydney 2014 event.
Inducted into this year's Project 5 artists hall of fame is Askew One (Elliot O'Donnell) - part of renowned artist collective TMD (The Most Dedicated) - from Auckland, NZ and two time winner of the prestigious international graffiti event Write4Gold; Perth's king of street art Kyle Hughes-Odgers; Sydney's prolific Alex Lehours; and Melbourne's 23rd Key, renowned for her photo-realistic works and national winner of the Stencil Art Prize.
Watch energy and creativity fuse as these next big talents each breathe life into a new large-scale artwork to be later auctioned for charity (Fri 26, Sat 27 and Sun 28 September, in the open-air studio at Darling Quarter's Village Green), while enjoying the energetic electro-beats of Sydney based artist EARS (a former Project Five artist).
The 4 pieces will be auctioned on Friday October 29, with 100% of the proceeds put to work for the Project's new partner Arts Ready, a not-for-profit organisation that helps young trainees establish themselves in careers in the arts and creative industries.
