One of the great country markets on our peninsula
SA's own Fleurieu Peninsula is blessed with many things, with active and vibrant country markets being one of these. And one of the best and most popular on the Peninsula is the Strathalbyn Market, held on the 3rd Sunday of every month.
Held in the Lions Park on South Terrace alongside the Visitor Information Centre at the Railway Station, these monthly markets consume the Park from 8am to 2pm with a wide array of food, arts, crafts and associated products.
A regular highlight, and one of the most popular stalls is the Sausage Sizzle. Hosted by the Freemasons Foundation with funds raised to support The Lodge of St John, the sizzling BBQ magnetises the crowd to this central location.
Surrounding the Sausage Sizzle are further treats from Dolce Vita with their cakes and cheesecakes, the Farmhouse Bakery with fresh breads and buns, and the mandatory early morning coffee stall. Not to be forgotten, the "One for each paw" stall with a range of pet treats ensures that all members of your family can enjoy their day out at the market.
A limited range of seasonal fruit of vegetables are usually on offer from stallholders such as Avindale Farm, but this is more than made up by the plants and greenery offered for sale by several vendors. For those looking to grow their own vegetables, the seedling farm has a range of vegetable seedlings for sale. The baby spinach looked particularly appealing and appeared ready for picking within the month.
Other stalls around the Park include regulars selling various products including books, kids clothes, homemade arts and crafts, jams, chutneys and preserves, while the Clock Maker and some antique vendors with a range of porcelain and glassware bring a touch of the real Strathalbyn to the market.
The markets are hosted by the Strathalbyn and Lakes Tourist Association who also have a stall providing some basic tourist information on the region, while also offering information to potential future stallholders as to what is required to host a stall.
Further information on the markets for potential stallholders or visitors is available from their facebook page, or alternatively from the Strathalbyn Visitor Centre. The markets are held all year round at the Railway Station with the exception of August where the market is located at the Strathalbyn Oval in conjunction with the Antiques and Craft Fair.
Although I have not been to the markets in Strath, the town itself is perhaps the most attractive inland town under 5000 people in South Aust. The 3 main streets, namely High St;Albyn Terrace and Dawson St; are linked and in part , follow the Soldier's Memorial Gardens, which are almost surrounded by the ever flowing River Angas.
