One of my favourite things to do when my children were younger, was to read to them. Without mentioning the obvious—the bedtime story—I would read to them any chance I got.

Although they are older now and albeit to say, they don't snuggle on my lap for a story, it is still something I love doing with them and for me reinventing our favourite book is something we all get have a part in.

We hear so much about the importance of reading and the lack there of in today's age, but I do believe it's not all bad. You just have to find what needs, suit your child. Read-alongs like this, are not only a bonding session, but getting your child enthusiastic about reading, will make them keen to learn to read by themselves. In no time at all, they will be recognising words and reading along with you!

There's nothing more satisfying for a young reader than reading out aloud for the first time, proud of what they have just achieved.

In keeping with bedtime story reading, the Brimbank municipality, with the participation of their libraries hold bedtime reading sessions, where pre-schoolers, to any age child, is welcome to hear stories read aloud.

The sessions begin at 6.30pm and all children, (parents too!) are encouraged to wear their pyjamas to the read-alongs.

What better way, especially in this Melbourne cold, than to snuggle in your warmest flannels and get along to the library to have someone read a story to you.

Not only will your children love it, but I am sure your inner child will love it just as much.
