As a mum, I love to sit down with my little one and read books. While research has shown they are great for language development and visual stimulation, I also enjoy just sitting down quietly on the couch, putting on my funniest voices and sound effects as bub turns the pages on cue. So when I heard that Wooldridges ran free story time sessions in-store, I decided to go and check one out.

I can't count the number of times I have driven past Wooldridges thinking they only sold educational supplies for teachers, not realising I could easily lose myself in their store for a morning surrounded with toys, books, games, arts and crafts galore.

When we arrived at the store for Story Time, we made our way over to the collection of little chairs and rugs nestled amongst large bookshelves filled with colourful books for kids of all ages. Sitting at the front, the reading tree lady greeted us and proceeded to read a number of stories; encouraging giggles, pointing and shouts from her audience of young ones.

To finish the session, we were each handed a copy of a book to read through together called 'Press Here,' a fantastic book in its simplicity which asks the child to press the yellow dot printed on the page and follows with a series of other instructions involving touch, colour, direction and numbers.

Following story time, we were invited to explore the shop and offered a discount for our purchases on the day. A few of the mums also got together for a chat in the coffee lounge located within the store. The lounge overlooked a small playground outside for the older kiddies to burn some energy before the car ride home. We ended up with a couple of new books, some finger puppets and plenty of ideas to keep us busy at home.

Story Time Under the Reading Tree is a great way to discover new books for your children and a wonderful excuse to get out of the house for the morning. Wooldridges is also filled with some fantastic rainy day or holidays activities such as craft kits, educational toys and arts supplies. Bookings are required to take part in story time and other special events are also offered throughout the year. For more information visit
