Everyone should dine beneath the iconic Story Bridge at least once. Originally called the Kangaroo Point Hotel (the name changed in 1940 when the Story Bridge opened), The Story Bridge Hotel has been serving Brisbanites since 1886. Owned and operated by the Deery family since 1967, 'The Bridge' is famous for it's Australia Day Cockroach Races.

The original three-story, Queenslander-style hotel still stands, with several function rooms and Deery's Restaurant; or guests can choose to dine at the more modern Shelter Bar or Outback Bar and Grill.

My husband and I recently enjoyed a leisurely lunch in The Story Bridge's urban beer garden the Outback Bar and Grill. Located directly underneath the Story Bridge, between pylons 19 and 20, the Outback Bar and Grill is a unique, outdoor, casual dining experience. The open space is filled with timber tables, heat lamps, and a bright red phone box. And while some might find the faint din of traffic above annoying, I actually enjoyed it a constant reminder that we were dining under an icon.

As it was a damp and drizzly day, we chose comfort food home-made pies and hot chips. I ordered their Chicken and Wild Mushroom Pie while my husband selected the Braised Beef and Guinness Pie. Instead of chips and coleslaw, you can opt for creamy potato mash and green beans.

The pastry is the most important part of a pie, and their pastry was perfect. My filling of chicken and wild mushrooms was tasty but my husband's braised beef and Guinness was delicious. Their pies must be pretty popular because when I glanced around, we weren't the only ones tucking into pies.

The Outback Bar and Grill is open seven days a week for lunch from 11:30am. Breakfast is available on weekends from 8am until 11am. And now you can enjoy jazz on Sunday afternoons from 3pm in the Outback.

Dine at Deery's Restaurant for a more formal dining experience, or catch up with friends for a few drinks at The Shelter Bar.

The Story Bridge Hotel is located at 200 Main Street in Kangaroo Point.
