Experience Racing Like You've Never Seen Before
Nothing says Australia Day in Brisbane more than that grand tradition of cockroach races at the Story Bridge Hotel . And this Australia Day, they are crawling back in their 38th year.
So how does it work? Well, picture this. There's an arena with a five-metre circular track and the critters are released so their long legs can dart and weave in all directions with stewards waiting to cheer and catch them.
The first one caught across the line earns a place in the Cocky Hall of Fame.
Come dressed in your favourite Aussie outfit and you might be named Great Northern's Best Dressed.
While the cockroach races have a place in our city's history so does The Story Bridge Hotel which was built in 1886. It was originally called The Logan Hotel. As a once favourite drinking hole for wharfies and labourers, it was considered one of the toughest pubs in Brisbane.
Gates open at 11am and the first race starts at 12pm. Entry is a gold coin donation with funds raised going to Youngcare
Youngcare is a not for profit organisation providing housing for young people with high care needs.
If it sounds like your kind of thing, make your way to the Story Bridge Hotel this Australia Day at 200 Main Street, Kangaroo Point for races of a different kind.
Kangaroo Point is located 2 kms from the Brisbane CBD.
