Irish artist Padraig McCaul didn't start painting until late in life. His first passion in life was music. He studied music as part of an arts degree at Maynooth University in Ireland and then spent the next 20 years of his life as part of a band.

He got into painting as a hobby and only decided to take it up full time after he felt that his time with his band had come to an end. Over 15 years later he is now working as a full-time artist.

Kidogo Arthouse in Fremantle will be hosting an exhibition of McCaul's work called 'Stories of Home' from the 13th to the 19th of July in the White Gallery. There will be original oil paintings and limited edition prints on display. This is McCaul's first time exhibiting his work in Australia.

Padraig McCaul paints landscapes. His biggest inspiration for him is the place that he calls home, Achill Island, which is located off the western coast of Ireland. He lives there with his wife and their three children.

In an interview with Charlie McBride for the Galway Advertiser he commented that the island had everything that a landscape artist could ever want. There is the sea, mountains, mist, old farm houses, sheep, roads, country lanes and a sky that is always changing colour. The other major inspiration in his life is his children. The human figures in Padraig's paintings are inspired loosely by drawings that his children made.

McCaul has harboured a love of landscape painting for years. Some of his favourite artists include Paul Henry, Roderic O'Conor, Paul Cézanne and Australian artist Sidney Nolan who did the 'Ned Kelly' series and is considered one of the best Australian artists of the 20th century.

I really liked Padraig's simplistic style and use of colour in his paintings.

In 'Fisherman's Cottage, Achill' the thing that really stands out to me is the red roof of the cottage and the white cliffs overlooking the ocean. His use of dark and light colour really brings the scene to life.

'Family at Keel' reminded me of Sidney Nolan's 'Ned Kelly' series. Keel is a village on Achill Island. I liked how Padraig used colour to make each of the family members stand out against a simple backdrop.

'Old House, Keel' made the best use of colour and shadow in my opinion. The thing that really drew my eye was the shadows stretching behind the house and the gradually darkening colours.

'The Old Farmhouse' is a painting of a country lane and an old farmhouse. I like the use of shadows and colours in this painting. My favourite part is the red patch behind the house. I liked how it blended flawlessly into the green.

If you are a fan of landscapes and like paintings with a lot of colour in them then you should definitely think about coming down to the Kidogo Arthouse to have a look at Padraig McCaul's paintings.

Artworks are priced from between $295 and $1490
