Stories from the Reef from Sydney Opera House website

There’s a new workshop at the Sydney Opera House that celebrates theatre and STEAM for students. Stories from the Reef is inspired by the Sydney Opera House Artificial Reef Project. During this workshop, students who attend will learn about sustainability and marine habitats. They’ll learn about all of this through fun theatre play, which combines drama and storytelling with movement. This fun workshop for kids to attend to learn about science and the marine life of Sydney Harbour.

Come and explore sustainability, the underwater ecosystems of Sydney, and plastic waste through creative play. This workshop will hope to increase the students’ understanding and sensitivity around healthy harbours as well as the relationship humans must care for and protect the natural environments around us.

To create their artistic underwater world, students will use recycled materials, self-expression, and imaginative play whilst coming up with the varied characters that could inhabit the artificial reef. They’ll also get to perform imagined stories as a group.

Here’s what students will learn about in the workshop:

  • Learn about ecosystems in the harbour around the Sydney Opera House.
  • Learn how artificial reefs are made, and work to support aquatic growth.
  • They will learn to collaborate with classmates to create characters, small pieces of art, ad storylines that will come together in a short play or presentation.
  • Take on a variety of roles like puppet maker, reef builder or ranger storyteller, and imaginatively engage with their learning.
  • They’ll get to explore drama play, storytelling and movement through a short performance.
  • They will develop an ability to express themselves and communicate their thoughts about how they relate to the natural world, and how they describe the observable features of the environment.
  • Finally, they will learn about how organisations like the Sydney Opera House can positively impact the environment and community with sustainability projects.

  • Tickets are $15, and is presented in English, with an audio loop available and is wheelchair accessible.
