On a recent trip to Sydney, to see my sister run a 42 km marathon I stayed in Darlinghurst. On my journey to Hyde Park to see her run, my first port of call, being a Melburnian, was coffee. Now, coffee is essential to Melburnians and we are spoilt for choice. We have the some of the best coffee and baristas in the world. Coffee in Sydney is getting better, but so far I've only tasted Campos and Toby's Estate, and they have a drier more bitter taste than Melbourne artisan coffee.

To my delight Stop Valve Expresso serves Reformatory coffee, and perfectly. I enjoyed best cafe latte here, and the staff are friendly, non-pretentious and efficient. The cafe houses a stop valve on display, something like a network of red water pipes valves. On the outside of the building is some cool street art, and a funky row of little shops. It's fairly quiet, it's leafy, and for a morning caffeine hit it's divine. I highly recommend the French toast with berry coulis and yoghurt on sourdough wholemeal – lite and heavenly!

Next time in Surry Hills try Single Origin coffee...tho I'm sure that blend would be in Melbourne cafes too:)
