Stonnington Jazz is firmly established as an important event on the national jazz calendar and in 2018, it's bigger and bolder than ever!Featuring an exciting festival program curated by Artistic Director Chelsea Wilson, this year's festival features an electrifying calibre of Australian Jazz musicians plus premieres, exclusives and collaborations.With more than 20 free and ticketed live music events in 11 days across the City of Stonnington, there is something for passionate jazz fans, newcomers to the exciting world of jazz and even children!The festival program runs from 10 to 20 of May 2018 and is highlighted with new, never before seen acts, as well as old favourites.Must see highlights include: James Morrison – a long established legend of jazz – introduces the new generation of Australian musicians. Performing with his handpicked Academy Jazz Orchestra, Morrison presents an array of compositions in the jazz big band tradition.An exclusive screening of Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome where The Shaolin Afronauts reinterpret the original film score LIVE with their distinct brand of otherworldly funk.
The premiere of Hear and Now: The Far East Suite .The inaugural Industry Summit – a must for any budding music professional with a jam-packed day of panel discussions, keynote speakers and performance workshops with some of the most prominent experts in the business. Network with industry professionals, media, musicians and fellow jazz lovers. Club Sessions across four nights at Melbourne Bowling Club's don't miss this exclusive pop up club to get you dancing into the wee hours with top bands and DJs. A Glimpse Behind Closed Doors - The breathtakingly beautiful contemporary dance of Queensland's Expressions collides with the virtuosic jazz of award-winning ensemble Trichotomy at the Melbourne premiere of their collaboration. Jazz In Colour – a collaboration between Swooping Duck 'three-quarters of Haitus Koyote' and interactive motion designer Zero Crossing. Using spontaneous harmony and adrenalin, the collective create sonic sculptures and a scintillating light show that traverse genre at Chapel Off Chapel, Friday May 18. Bjork reinterpreted - In a Stonnington Jazz premiere, The Surface Project will re-work, re-imagine and re-model pieces from Iceland's most famous exports' inimitable repertoire, whilst Fabian Acuna creates a visual score projected behind the artists to paint an optic representation of the music.
