The City of Stonnington is providing people of all ages and fitness levels with an opportunity to join fitness classes in the park - for free. Classes are conducted in the parks and gardens within the City of Stonnington each week day until 19 December 2014. Choose from Gentle Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Tai Chi or Chi Gong.
Gentle Yoga in the Park is held on Monday's from 9.30am - 10.30 am in Victoria Gardens, High Street, Prahran. Do exercise on a Monday and this will get you motivated to stay active for the week by setting your psychological pattern.
Use the ancient, classic yoga style Hatha Yoga, to get fit and encourage a healthy mind-body connection on Thursdays from 9.30am – 10.30am and 10.30am – 11.30am at Princes Gardens, Essex Street, Prahran.
On Tuesdays, at 10.00am arrive at the Malvern Gardens for a session of Tai Chi under the sky. Have you seen people in movies and tv adverts practicing a graceful form of exercise involving a series of slow, focused movements? This is Tai chi, an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced for its health benefits. T'ai chi concentrates on relieving the physical effects of stress on the body and mind.
If you have Wednesday morning off, pop down to the Percy Treyvaud Memorial Park in Malvern East for Qigong practice.
Qigong is another ancient Chinese practice, that typically involves moving meditation, coordinating slow flowing movement, deep rhythmic breathing, and calm meditative state of mind. Qigong is now practiced worldwide for recreation, exercise and relaxation, preventive medicine and self-healing, complementary and alternative medicine, meditation and self-cultivation, and training for martial arts. This class will run for an hour from 10am.
Mums and bubs can also join a special Friday Mums and Bubs Class at 9.30am – 10.30am at Phoenix Park (beside playground) 22 Rob Roy Road, Malvern East.
All classes are for all ages of varying fitness levels. The instructor will demonstrate varying positions to allow you to do what feels comfortable, or to increase the intensity, allowing you to get the most out of the workout safely.
If you're a curious beginner, this is a great opportunity to try it out for free - no one is watching you - just the instructor!
No need to register beforehand, simply turn up to your preferred class.
