From the outside, Stokers Coffee Lounge seems very unassuming. Located along Heidelberg Rd in Ivanhoe, it looks very much like a crummy old place that has been deserted for many years. However don't let that put you off from entering and discovering its secret: this is the place for a late night session of pancakes!

When entering inside the doors of this coffee and pancake lounge, it's like walking through the wardrobe and out to the world of Narnia. Alright one may think I am exaggerating here, however visit this place and you will fully understand what I mean. It truly is a stepping back in time experience.

The wooden interior of the lounge just screams out warmth and comfort; it is as if you have walked into a Swedish ski lodge. The cosy atmosphere is fuelled by the fact that in the centre of the dinning floor, stands an open fire furnace that I imagine would be perfect for those cold wintery nights. The kitchen where your pancakes are made with perfection and caring love is very reminiscent of a homemaker's kitchen from the 50's. With the nostalgic homey décor, subdued lights and the easy listening sounds of jazz melodies, it's definitely a perfect place for a romantic night out!

Although it is popularly known as a place for pancakes, you'll actually be served the French variety of pancakes called 'crepes'. The one that I recommend is the 'Fresh Strawberry Pancake,' cut pieces of fresh strawberries on a layer of strawberry jam, comfortably wrapped inside a thin layer of delicious pancake. Have this with a side of ice-cream and the time you spent waiting for this crepe will simply fade away. In addition to desert crepes, Stokers also offers a variety of savoury pancakes and a surprisingly interesting drink menu that has a variety of coffees, teas, juices, smoothies and milkshakes.

One little criticism I have of the menu is that they don't unfortunately have chocolate pancakes, which is a shame because I'm a massive fan of chocolate and banana pancakes. Ah well, I guess you can't get everything eh?

Oh another thing that I will give you an early heads up on is that Stokers is strictly no alcohol establishment therefore drinking and BYO will not be tolerated. Upon entering, you'll see a sign next to the retro style cash register that points to this rule.

One of the best parts I like about Stokers Coffee Lounge, is the fact that it's one of the few places in the northern suburbs, apart from fast food joints, that are open late night. Having lived in parts of Asia where the food party continues throughout the night, Stokers Coffee Lounge is definitely a welcome change from the quiet suburbia of Melbourne.

So if you have the case of the munchies or just a craving from something sweet food, Stokers Coffee Lounge is the place to go for some hidden pancakes!
