Get your tickets to Still, I Rise - Shakira Clanton at Darlinghurst Theatre Company, 39 Burton St (corner Palmer St), Darlinghurst from Wed 5 to Sat 9 May 2021 with shows from Wed to Fri at 7.30pm and Sun at 6pm, running for 1.5 hours. Actor and singer Clanton takes to the stage to share stories from her extraordinary life and perform her favourite songs. Underscored by Jeremi Campese's astounding skill on the cello, this will be a memorable evening of live music, yarning and laughs.
The evening traverses a range of Clanton's life experiences from the racism and sexism she's faced as a woman of colour in the creative industry, the lessons her single mother tried to impart on her as a teenager, to getting hitched in 2019 and spending the first year of marriage in lockdown with her new husband. The title of the show references the famous poem by Maya Angelou, which speaks of overcoming situations with confidence. "This work is a celebration of the resilience of marginalised people in the face of oppression," said Clanton.
Born in Perth to Aboriginal Australian and African American parents, Clanton honed her craft at both the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and the National Institute of Dramatic Arts (NIDA). Henrietta Baird's The Weekend (Sydney Festival/Moogahlin), and I'm With Her (Darlinghurst Theatre Company).
