Don't be fooled by the name of the show, because Steve Chang's show A Complete Waste of Time will take its audience on an "introspective journey", where they can explore the meaning of life. Using the art of stand-up comedy and storytelling, audience members are encouraged to walk into the show with a (very) open mind, as they experience little snippets of Chang's life and be entertained for 55 minutes, which will be equal parts hilarious and intriguing.

I was fortunate enough to score an e-interview with Chang, in anticipation of his arrival in Adelaide for the Fringe festival - have a read of our exchange below:

Tema: Can you tell us a bit about yourself, Steve?
Steve: I'm a comedian from the US.

Tema: What made you want to get into comedy?
Steve: I've always liked comedy but no one ever told me I was funny, so I'm on a mission to prove the entire world wrong. Either I'm wrong or 7.7 billion people are wrong. I'm betting it's them.

Tema: How long have you been part of the comedy industry? How have you found your involvement in this industry so far?
Steve: I've been doing comedy for several years and I haven't accomplished much yet. I think it's a difficult career path. Also I'm not that talented. But, I'm determined to succeed and I've seen progress. Recently, I found out one of my friends (who is more talented than me) quit doing comedy. So there you have it - I'm better by default.

Tema: OK let's cut to the chase - why is your show called A Complete Waste of Time? Is it really A Complete Waste of Time?
Steve: I believe that pretty much everything in life is a complete waste of time, when you really think about it. Well... maybe not everything, but mostly everything, so I just round up and say everything. And if everything is a complete waste of time, then my show is definitely a complete waste of time.

Tema: What inspired you to come up with the concept of your show?
Steve: The show is a mix of stand up and storytelling and it's about true stories from my life. I've done some cool shit and I wanted to share it with the world.

Tema: What can people expect from attending your show?
Steve: There's some meaningful commentary about life somewhere in there. But, I don't really care if people get that. I just want them to enjoy the show and think it's funny.

Tema: How would you explain your performance to someone who has never been to your show before?
Steve: It's like a comedy show, except instead of seeing a famous comedian, you'd be taking a chance on someone you've never heard of. So, it might suck, but you should see it anyway, just in case I become famous, and then you can tell people you saw me back when I sucked.

Tema: What is your ideal target audience for your show?
Steve: I like audiences who would come to the show just based on the title.

Tema: What do you think would help people not think of your show as A Complete Waste of Time and come along to the show?
Steve: I'm not going to lie. The show is, in fact, a complete waste of time. But, it's still probably better than most of the other crap that's out there, so might as well see this one.

Tema: How did you get involved with the Adelaide Fringe (AF)?
Steve: Well, I've been doing comedy for a while and I've pretty much conquered America at this point, so I thought Australia would be the next best place to visit.

Tema: What made you want to be a part of the AF?
Steve: I heard that Adelaide Fringe is the second largest arts festival in the world. So I'm hoping there's a lot of potential audience members. And if there's not, I'm never coming back to Australia.

Tema: How many years have you been involved with the AF? How have found the experience(s) of being involved with the AF?
Steve: This will be my first year. My experience so far is I went on the AF website and it was pretty tight.

Tema: What are you anticipating from the AF this year?
Steve: I think people are going to love my show so much it's gonna lead to riots in the streets. Well, I don't know if they're gonna love it or hate it, but either way, I'm hoping for riots.

Tema: How did you score the venue The A Club for your show?
Steve: The A Club has a great location and it was the only available venue when I was booking on the last day before the registration deadline.

Tema: Have you taken your performance interstate / overseas? If so, where have you performed and what has that experience been like? If not, where are you hoping to take your show?
Steve: I've done this show at the Hollywood Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. I've learned a lot from this experience. For example, now I know how to get people to come to Fringe shows. The key is harassing random people on the street. It's a numbers game. The more people you harass, the more people you can get to come to your show.

Tema: Is there anything else that you'd like your audience / our readers to know about you and your show A Complete Waste of Time?
Steve: If you're reading this interview and you made it to the end, you probably have too much time on your hands anyway, so please come to my show and let me waste your time.

Steve Chang's show A Complete Waste of Time will be performing at The A Club from February 15 - 24.
