Officially opened in October 2020, the Steub Trail is a great alternative to the popular but steep Waterfall Gully Hike. It provides people with reduced mobility, as well as families with young children, the opportunity to reach Mount Lofty Summit via a gentle low-gradient slope.
Offering a more accessible option, this new 3.5-kilometre trail gently climbs through forest woodlands from Cleland Wildlife Park. I would recommend taking the time to enjoy the beautiful views as you walk along. Also keep an eye out for bandicoots, echidnas, yellow-tailed cockatoos and kangaroos. And, once you reach the peak, a panoramic view across Adelaide awaits you.
Capped with recycled asphalt material, I found its surface to be rather smooth. I even saw a couple of parents with prams the morning I was there. National Parks and Wildlife Service classifies the Steub Trail as a moderate hike, so, unless you're wanting to train for Nepal, it is definitely worth checking out.
Thanks very much for this Audrey. Look forward to doing this walk next time visiting Adelaide.... could be a while unfortunately. First stop is always Mt Lofty for a coffee and the little circular 5-10 minute walk around the summit. This new walk looks great (I've not attempted the Waterfall Gully trek up since I was a teenager and once was enough!)
