Mine shafts dotted around the area
Visiting Steiglitz Historic Park is like stepping back in time to the gold rush era. During the mid and late 19th century, Steiglitz had over a thousand residents with hotels, shops and churches all in operation within the township. It also had its own newspaper. Sadly, what was a busy gold mining town is now pretty much a ghost town. It has a population of about 60 and not more than 30 dwellings. Most of Steiglitz is part of the historic park we know today.

Members of the public are welcome to come and enjoy its surroundings, be it a pleasant walk or a relaxing picnic. The old township itself is easily walkable. Simply park your car at the courthouse and wander through where the buildings remain or once stood. However, do respect the privacy of residents and their homes. These private properties are not to be entered. Uncovered mine shafts are dotted around the area too, so please be careful and keep to the tracks.
St Paul's Church of England
Along Regent Street, you'll find St Paul's Church of England. The timber building was consecrated as a church in March 1871. Services were held here until August 1962. Nearby, the old weatherboard post office and drapery building (currently a private residence) which was built in 1865 still stands for all to admire. Another church can also be found on the outskirts of town. St Thomas Roman Catholic Church was built along Meredith-Steiglitz Road in 1868.
Old post office and drapery
Due to waning fortunes, the courthouse was only in use for a few years during the late 1870s and 1890s. Today, it houses a collection of photographs, maps and relics but unfortunately wasn't open when we visited on a Sunday afternoon. I later found out that it opens most, not all, Sundays.
St Thomas Roman Catholic Church
Steiglitz Historic Park is located approximately 40 kilometres northwest of Geelong. The drive took me less than 45 minutes. Before heading out, I'd suggest downloading the
visitor guide which has information about all available walks and picnic areas.
