Serving Fonzie Abbott coffee and silky, luscious smoothies and juices, Steamtrain Espresso has found a home in the Red Hill cafe scene.
On the cool and rainy winters day that I visited, I sampled the wholesome chunky minestrone soup. What a great choice. Coffees are served in grey and white Fonzie Abbott take away cups and so reasonably priced at $3.40 for a small cappuccino. Acai bowls for breakfast with a banana, cacao, peanut butter. oat and blueberry breakfast smoothie is a summery option which I'll save for a warmer day.
The cafe itself is small and modern with a black and white interior palette, touches of brick inspired wallpaper, classic wooden floors, bench seating and a single table.
Owner, Dane, has cleverly converted the covered carport at the side of the shop to provide additional seating. Laying astro turf and adding eclectic, mismatched furniture gives the space a warm and funky feel, perfect to relax and chat. The kids haven't been forgotten either. There are toys to play with, a chalkboard to draw on and books to get lost in. The bookcase serves as a book exchange station where visitors can read, swap and take books home. How clever.
