Did you know that the only complete and functioning steam powered engine used for a municipal water supply in its original location in the Southern Hemisphere is located in Goulburn?

And did you know that this Sunday 13th March, the old girl will be primed up for a rare 'Steaming' session?

The Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum is set on the banks of the picturesque Wollondilly River at Marsden. It was built between 1883 and 1885 and the steam operated pumping facility provided Goulburn's first reticulated water supply. The pumphouse still contains the original Appleby Bros. Beam Engine pump and Galloway boilers.

The buildings and engine are of national significance and are now protected by a permanent conservation order. The Waterworks is listed on the State Heritage and National Trust Registers. It's impressively housed and in immaculately condition.

Also on site is a horizontal engine built by Hick, Hargreaves & Co, England in 1866. While not original to the site it demonstrates an earlier type and different style of a stationary steam engine.

The sight of the Waterworks is very reminiscent of a classic English country watermill. The area has been lovingly landscaped with BBQ's, play equipment and walks along the river.

Volunteers are on hand to answer your questions and tours are available.

Entry to the Goulburn Historic Waterworks Museum and grounds is available every Sunday from 10am – 4pm, Monday and Tuesday from 10am – 2pm, most school and public holidays 10am-4pm.
