If you missed the Sydney Theatre Company's sold-out production of The Secret River in 2013, make sure you catch it this time around. Based on the novel by Kate Grenville, this tale of Australia's first people is one of the best productions to grace the Sydney stage.

The Secret River follows William Thornhill, a London thief transported to New South Wales in the early 1800s. Earning his freedom, Thornhill settles himself and his new family on what he believes to be unclaimed land on the edge of the Hawkesbury River. But the land actually belongs to the Dharug people, who rely on the land for their very existence. What unfolds is a clash of cultures that has been played out hundreds of times in our nation's history.

Beautifully and creatively staged, entertaining and at times confronting, this is a must-see play. It talks to Sydney's history, from the perspective of the traditional owners as well as its convict past. The use of Indigenous music and dance transports the audience into another world, and brings a greater perspective to the story than that contained in the original novel.

Director Neil Armfield has created a uniquely Australian production, featuring a huge cast that handle the difficult story with a tender touch. You will need the tissues!

The Secret River is playing for a strictly limited season from 1 February to 20 February at the Roslyn Packer Theatre in Walsh Bay.

Tickets start from $94 for adults and are available from the Sydney Theatre website .
