When I tell my friends and relatives overseas how much I am freezing winter time in QLD Australia, they don't believe me! But honestly, I am freezing to the bones. The houses here usually are not insulated and if you like me, are living in a rental house, you know what I am talking about! After my power bill last winter, I have to find a cheaper but effective solution.

So what to do?

This is what we can do to stay warm in our homes without the heater on.

1. Give all your windows a closer look. It's a good idea to keep your windows air-tight.

Here a link for what I found is a awesome idea and easy to DIY;
How to Bubble Wrap your Window .

But at a minimum, stuff a towel or shirt in front of any noticeable leaks.

2. Doors let not only you in or out!

DIY draft dodger!

You can easily eliminate the cold air coming from under any door.  Just take an old knee sock and fill it with, for example pillow stuffing, sand or cat litter, then stitch up the ends and that's it!  In addition to being creative, this is also a great project for kids.

PS. Don't forget to measure the width of door before you start.

3. Clothing of course can do much to keep us warm. How about a stretchy neck warmer ?

Any fleece or wool is great for a neck warmer when watching TV or reading a book.

Wear long underwear and long sweaters, don't forget the good old sleeping caps, to keep those pair of ears warm!

4. Feet
When next time shopping take a look at house slippers for indoors. Choose one with a rubber sole; the sole makes a difference and keeps you warmer on your feet.

Of course socks are our best friends. A cosy pair socks worn in bed keeps feet warm, and as long as your feet are warm, your body is warm.

5. Bed

Rice, corn, flaxseed or wheat bags can be used as a cosy bed warmer!  No I am not kidding. And your have probably already everything at home to stitch one together right now!

Here's a little help:

The old fashioned hot water bottle is useful for warming up your bed on a cold night, and please, if you have not used you hot water bottle for a while, check for leaks! Nothing worse than a wet bed!

6. Candle Lights

The good old candle in a new smart way to use for heating your room. It will cost between 8 and 15 cent per day to make a room cuddly warm. Here are two links to check out how to do it;

7. Last but not least, cuddle your partner and/or your pets, to keep your warm in heart and body!

Have a Nice "warm" Winter!
