As someone looking for the best view of the Manhattan and Brooklyn skyline, try the Staten Island Ferry. The trip is free (has been since 1997) and takes about 25 minutes each way to St. George on Staten Island and back to Whitehall Street in lower Manhattan. The ferry runs about every 15 minutes during rush hour and every half hour the rest of the day. During bad weather or foggy days, the schedule may change.

One can see Ellis Island, Statue of Liberty as well as the skyscrapers and bridges of Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan. During rush hour times, the ferry can be quite full, so plan on using during weekday between 9 am - 3 pm.

Since 2005, the New York City Department of Transportation has become the first United States ferry operator to voluntarily comply with safety guidelines and complete a year-long project of implementing a safety management system.

The Whitehall Street Terminal can be found at 4 South Street.
