Located on the corner of Latrobe and Swanston Streets, the State Library of Victoria is host to many free events.

Currently on show, "Love and Devotion: From Persia and Beyond", a spectacular exhibit showcasing over 60 manuscripts, including illustrated 13th to 18th century manuscripts from Persia, Mughal India, and Turkey. Open daily 10am-5pm (to 9pm on Thursday) until July 1st.

Permanent and free exhibitions include "Mirror of the World: Books and Ideas" on level 4, which celebrates the history of book production and design; and "The changing face of Victoria" on level 5, a collection of artefacts, illustrations and prose that have shaped the life of Victoria, including a replica of Ned Kelly's amour.

Other activities in the library include a cinema screening every second Wednesday at noon and at 6.30pm; bookings are required for the evening session, however entry is free to all shows.

A range of free learning programs are also offered such as a genealogy workshop, and effectively using library and internet resources. Specific learning programs may be arranged for groups at an hourly fee of $5.50 per person to learn about topics such as art, literature, health, business and history.

There are many free activities for children too regular story time, and during the school holidays, listen to story-tellers, play games, and make your own book or Ned Kelly helmet. A beautiful building which provides a perfect place to read a book, study, or escape the noise of the city.
