Startup For some people a weekend is a time to relax, vegetate on the sofa watching TV, with their brain firmly turned off. For others weekends are the time to do something useful. For the select few, the time between finishing work on a Friday to Sunday evening is enough time to setup a new business.
What is a Startup weekend?
Welcome to Startup weekends. You get numerous motivated and talented people together in a room, add some pizza and beer, and you will never know what will happen.
There are a number of startup weekend organisations around the world all using a similar pattern. You meet on a Friday and recruit people to be in your team or join someone else's team. Most teams are looking for a diverse group of people including developers, graphic designers, business people and subject matter experts. The more varied your team the better.
At the very minimum, by Sunday afternoon you pitch your idea to a panel, usually for a range of prizes to help you get your business going such as mentorship programs, access to working space or other resources, or even prize money.
For some technology startups they can even put together a basic technology platform and find customers by the end of the weekend. Many startup ideas go nowhere but a fair few from every weekend keep going.
