The history of
The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan goes back as far as Magistrate
William Howe , who in 1818, purchased land to establish Glenlee Estate. A few years later, he purchased another block, this time from Mount Annan land, which he also incorporated into his estate. Sometime in the 1850's, James Fitzpatrick acquired the land and his descendants ran a dairy farm there until 1978. Between 1850 and 1978, an additional water source for Sydney was constructed on part of the land, which created a series of tunnels, aqueducts and open canals transporting water to Prospect Reservoir, some sixty-four kilometres away.
By 1970, the Macarthur Development Board owned the land and a riding school was established with barley crops grown in two paddocks to feed the horses. In 1975, the Board designated the land to became part of a Scenic Protection Zone. The New South Wales Government decreed the allocation of 400 hectares for a native botanic garden in 1984 and gave administration to The Royal Botanic Gardens & Domain Trust. Over the following year, planning and construction of roads, lakes, irrigation, nursery and themed gardens began and continue to this day with new and innovative improvements, making The Australian Botanic Garden Mount Annan a delight and an education for visitors and locals.
