Staring at Strangers - Film Review (Spanish Film Festival 2023)



Staring at Strangers will be shown as one of the 32 films selected to be shown at the Spanish Film Festival 2023, after finding success at other festivals. The film was awarded winner of the Best Ibero-American Film at the Valladolid International Film Festival 2022 and was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay at the Goya Awards 2023.

Staring at Strangers begins with a talkshow host and his special guest Damian (Paco León), as he recounts his experience of losing his cool at work and then seeking refuge in a wardrobe. It's a decision that results in him being unknowingly delivered to the house of Lucía (Leonor Watling) and Fede (Juan Diego Botto), and their adolescent daughter, María.

Damian decides to stay and what follows is an intriguing story, which paints a picture of loneliness and isolation. There is not a large amount of dialogue in the film but the cinematography in the film was exceptional and tells the story better than the dialogue ever could. It is a disconcerting film, but it is still worth a look.

Staring at Strangers will be shown nationally between 15 June and 10 July at Palace Balwyn, Palace Brighton Bay, Palace Cinema Como, Kino, Pentridge Cinema, Palace Westgarth, Chauvel Cinema, Palace Central, Palace Norton Street, Palace Verona, Palace Electric, Palace Barracks, Palace James St, Palace Nova Eastend, Luna Leederville, Palace Raine Square, Luna on Sx and Palace Byron Bay.
