Since it first blasted onto our movie screens in 1977,
Star Wars has had such a deep and profound impact on Western pop culture and society. Even if you've lived in a galaxy far, far away these last 40 plus years, I'm betting you would still have heard of Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, Han Solo, Chewbacca, those two loveable droids R2-D2 and C3-PO, and of course, the not so loveable but absolutely unforgettable Darth Vader.
With yet another movie on the way (
Star Wars: Episode IX to be released later this year), the
Star Wars universe continues to be as popular as ever. And luckily for Canberra's
Star Wars fans, a galactically spectacular exhibition currently on show at the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney is helping to keep the Force well and truly strong.
The '
Star Wars: Identities ' Exhibition, developed and produced by X3 Productions in collaboration with Lucasfilm Ltd, brings together 200 original costumes, props, models, and pieces of artwork from the
Star Wars films, all in the one location. The exhibition looks at the
Star Wars films—and at what makes someone who they are—through the lens of the sciences of identity. This includes genetics, neuropsychology, health sciences, and psychology.
Here are ten reasons why I think Canberrans should get into their Millenium Falcons (or X-Wings or Star Destroyers, etc) and lightspeed their way up to Sydney to see this exhibition:
1. You can design your own Star Wars hero.
This is a unique and exciting feature of the exhibition where you get your chance to create your own character from the Star Wars universe. Bounty Hunter, Fighter Pilot, or Jedi Knight; Ewok, Twi'lek or Zabrak; from the planet Dagobah, Naboo, or Coruscant...the choices and stories are many. And you get to choose your own!
2. Darth Vader.
Once he was known as Anakin Skywalker, but he was seduced by the Dark Side of the Force and became Darth Vader, the penultimate villain. The costume and mask are from the 1983 film
Star Wars VI: The Return of the Jedi.
3. Han Solo frozen in carbonite.
One of the most famous (or infamous) scenes in
Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back is when Darth Vader has Han Solo frozen in carbonite. And now at the exhibition, you can finally see Han in his famous frozen pose.
4. Stormtroopers.
Star Wars isn't really Star Wars without Stormtroopers, right? These soldiers of the Galactic Empire were commanded by Darth Vader.
5. C3-PO and R2-D2.
These two beloved and iconic droids have appeared in all of the Star Wars films.
6. AT-AT.
A model of the All-Terrain Armoured Transport that was used in the Battle of Hoth in
Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back.
7. The Millenium Falcon.
A model of Han Solo's famous starship, the Millenium Falcon. According to Han, the Falcon is the fastest starship in the galaxy.
8. Chewbacca.
Han Solo's loyal friend and co-pilot on the Millenium Falcon. Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk.
9. Boba Fett.
Everybody's favourite Bounty Hunter. Hired by Darth Vader to capture Han Solo in
Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back.
10. Yoda.
He may be small and green and cute, but Yoda is actually one of the most powerful Jedi Masters in the
Star Wars universe.
'Star Wars: Identities' is showing until June 10, 2019 at the Powerhouse Museum, 500 Harris Street, Ultimo. Tickets are $36 adults, $32 concession, $23 children aged 4-16, and $95 family.
Due to its huge popularity, visitors are allotted specific times to see the exhibition. Expect to spend about 90 minutes (one hour and a half) to view the exhibition. To book your tickets, go
here.
For more information on the exhibition, please visit the exhibition website
here.
'Star Wars: Identities' is a must-see for all Star Wars fans. As Master Yoda would say, "Go to this exhibition, you must."
And may the force be with you.
Always.
