I'd love to know the back story. What was the impetus for the collaboration between the astronomer and the orchestra?

This unique sound and visual show, featuring 10 String Guitarist Matthew James Fagan plus band and orchestra set on stage with an enormous screen showing unseen authentic footage from NASA, close up vision of planets and cartoon images of man's fascination for space.

The orchestra performed music of Pink Floyd, Holst, War of the Worlds, ELO, Queen, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alan Parsons, original compositions and more.

The show started with Perry Vlahos (a leading astronomer acknowledged as one of the world's experts in the night sky). He presented multi-media images and threw in a bit of humour. As a prelude to the musical performance, Perry did a bit of myth-busting where I learn a few things about the universe.

I found out that there is no current way to see all the stars. Only 3000 stars can be seen from the earth with the naked eye. That still seems a lot to me! If you want to know some fascinating facts about the sun and red dwarf stars -this is the show for you.
Of interest to me was the interactive night sky viewing program, projecting the stars live, taking the audience on a journey through the cosmos.

The audience was very diverse. Ranging from children to the elderly and from my view on the landing, I noticed no one was using their mobile phone! There was silent participation and attention.

We enjoyed the band and were particularly impressed by the guitarist Matthew James Fagan (aka Lord of the Strings!) and the drummer/percussionist. The classical and rock tunes were played with equal expertise. The original Celtic songs were lovely. The solar show was like icing on the cake.

This novel performance was shown at Deakin Edge Federation. This quote will give you a sense of the mood. When we entered an audience member said to me 'Oh this is so exciting'.
