In the mood for some dim sum , I decided to try one of the many yum cha restaurants that line Gouger St, in the Chinatown area. A waft of delicious, freshly made dumplings lured me into Star House.

It was a Sunday morning, barely past 10am (their opening time on Sunday) and already there were a handful of customers. The other yum cha restaurants I passed weren't as lucky; it made me raise my expectations of Star House, because hey, if customers are flocking to your restaurant on a Sunday morning, it must be because it's something to talk about.

It's not a real yum cha session if you don't order tea, so once me and my friend had a few sips of tea, our stomachs grumbled in unison and we waited eagerly for the staff to push a cart of food our way. We didn't have to wait long; there are quite a number of waiting staff at Star House and they are all busy carting around food to their patrons.

The first dish we got was a favourite of my friend: jellyfish. It has a chewy, almost rubbery texture, but it's delicious all the same. I prefer to stick to actual dumplings, however.

We got steamed pork ribs next. Hard to go wrong with these, they tasted just fine. Though a few carts with fried dumplings passed by, I usually prefer to stick to steamed dumplings to try and be healthier. There were plenty of fried dumplings on offer though, if that's more up your alley.

Siew mai, or in English, pork dumplings, are a must have in every yum cha session. Star House serves their pork dumplings with shrimp on top, an excellent addition.

I was a little disappointed that Star House didn't have my all-time favourite dumpling: the soup dumpling . To make up for it, I ordered the Golden Sand bun. It's not a very common dish and that's a shame, because everybody should try this little piece of heaven. The outside is a white fluffy steamed bun and the inside has salty egg yolk. It doesn't sound quite as delicious on paper but trust me, you won't regret biting into that bun.

I had a pretty good dining experience at Star House; the staff was friendly and helpful, the food was not too bad. I like that there's a huge range of food here. It gets a bit crowded and noisy, but that's pretty normal in a yum cha restaurant. However I kind of expected a bit more from Star House, probably from their reputation as being one of the best yum cha restaurants. Instead it was just a non-memorable, average yum cha session for me. It was also pretty pricey, which is always a minus for a student like me. But one thing I liked about Star House was its opening hours; the restaurant is pretty much open everyday. It's long hours mean you'll always get a chance to have some dumplings.
