Established in 2007,
Star House Chinese Restaurant along Gouger Street in Adelaide offers a wide range of Chinese dishes. It was very popular, there was a large crowd when we visited it for dinner on a weekday.
When ordering their Canton Roast Duck, diners have the choice of either a whole or half-sized portion. The flesh was juicy and easy to eat off the bones. It was set off nicely by the crisp skin which was rendered correctly. Served with the duck was a dipping sauce that had a sweet-savoury flavour.

Among the entree dishes that can be ordered as a main-sized dish, the soft-shell crab in the Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab was cooked just right and had a lovely crisp coating. The salt and pepper seasoning was not too salty, and extra flavour was provided by cubes of onion. A bed of fried vegetable leaves added extra texture to the dish.

The eggplant in the Salty Fish & Chicken Mince with Eggplant Hot Pot was soft while still retaining some texture, and was complemented nicely by chicken mince. We liked that the chunks of salted fish were of a good size, which gave the dish its signature salty taste. Take care when eating the eggplant as the dish comes to you steaming hot.

Served as a cold dish, the pieces of chicken in the Szechuan Chicken in Red Chilli Sauce were tender and the skin was not rubbery. The red chilli sauce gave the dish a fiery punch and a contrast of texture was provided by chunks of cucumber. Like the Salt and Pepper Soft Shell Crab, it can be ordered as an entree or main dish.

The flesh of the pork ribs in the Crispy Pork Ribs with Garlic was not too tough and easy to bite off the bones. They were cooked sufficiently to give them a golden-brown colour. Fried garlic gave the dish a garlicky taste and a bed of fried green vegetables completed the dish.

The chunks of cucumber in the Cucumber Salad retained some bite and the dressing had a delectable tangy flavour. Extra flavour was provided by garlic, and peanuts added a bit of crunch. Its refreshing taste makes it a great foil for their spicy dishes.

The decor of the restaurant gave it an Asian feel. Booking ahead is advised to ensure you get a table when you visit.
