I'd probably never recommend as the be all and end all of clubbing, drinking or food. However, whenever you need a place to head to before a big night or perhaps a place to go after a party – this is it. Hands down.

Decently cheap drinks, a quite surreal atmosphere, enjoyable upstairs club and pool tables downstairs means you have all the ingredients to get a night started or finish it off.

It works well as either a pre or post venue.

Let's start with the clubbing/dance floor area – easily the standout. I've been to a few times, but not until recently did I test out the upstairs floor.

It is a huge area and when packed to the rafters there is an amazing feel. There are three or four disco balls and a range of other awnings that drop from the ceiling, with the laser lighting and music video screens adding some eccentricity to proceedings.

The DJs play some terribly slow and mellow tracks at time, but the general mood of the place should tempt you to dance either way!

Probably the biggest plus of going to before hand is the fact that they do daily $3.90 house drinks from 5pm to 11pm – you're not going to get that type of value at many other places. You'll even get the standard drink for $3.50 at the best of times during the day.

Food is equally as good. They have a range of cheap meals starting at a crazy $6.95 for a decent cut of sirloin and sides. Great value it has to be said.

Star also has a classic sports bar setting on the main level, with plenty of big screens and pool tables on offer. Perfect for a low key catch up with some mates over a beer or two. $1 for a game of 8-ball and you're laughing.

They're open late too, so don't fret if you were planning on getting there in the early hours. They officially shut around 6am on Fridays and Saturdays, whilst they close at 4am on weekdays and Sunday.

Another great thing about is the convenient location on George Street. It is literally across the road from Event Cinemas and just a stroll up the road from the Metro Theatre. So next time you're in need of a drink or meal before catching a film or your favourite act perform, head to Star.

Not the prettiest place ever, but when you want value for money, nothing quite beats . It's suited for a bunch of different types of occasions and if I had to make a recommendation, start your night here with some cheap drinks and thrills.
