Stanthorpe's Regional Art Gallery definitely punches above its weight as one of the best regional galleries in Queensland, if not Australia. With exhibitions changing every 6 weeks, as well as performances and workshops, it is definitely worth popping in to visit if you are in Stanthorpe.
About the Gallery
Located in Weeroona Park and essentially forming part of the
Artistic Stanthorpe Walking Trail , the gallery was established in 1972, and has become one of the most highly regarded regional art galleries in Australia. Weeroona Park also features a number of sculptors.
The gallery consists of 2 floors, or more accurately a main gallery space and a mezzanine floor. Up on the mezzanine, you will find a small library of books on art and design.
The gallery director, Mary Findaly, has been with the gallery for the last 5 years and is proud that the gallery is run independently and not government-owned. While it might be argued that this is what drives the gallery to push for greater success, Mary attributes the success to the breadth and depth of artistic talent in the region.
Events and highlights
Their goal is to rotate their artworks every 6 weeks, so that there is always something new to see when you visit Stanthorpe. They also have a permanent collection of over 900 works, many of which can be viewed online.
There are a number of events on at the gallery. Musical events include classical music performances and the Granite Belt Choir. Other performances include poetry readings, as well as talks with artists.
The gallery also runs a number of workshops. Some examples include creating your own silk scarves and art appreciation courses.
Then there are competitions with the Stanthorpe Art Prize attracting entrants across Australia. Another highlight is the
Stanthorpe Photography Awards.
The Boutique
There is also a small gallery shop, called The Boutique. This features a range of works for sale by local artists. So you can take a bit of the artistry of Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt Region home with you.
Overall
There are lots of reasons to visit the . Maybe it is something just as simple as you are looking for a cool air-conditioned place to escape the summer heat. Or perhaps it is where you will start and end the
Artistic Stanthorpe Walking Trail . Of course, you might be interested in the large amounts of talent featured in the gallery. Then there are concerts, poetry readings, talks and workshops. Maybe I should have just written the shorter list of the reasons to not go there given that there are so many good reasons to pop into this great little gallery.
