On Sunday July 22, 2018, Stangate House and Garden will be open. The house is maintained by the National Trust for historic reasons, while the beautiful garden is tended by volunteers of the Camellia Association.
The program stipulates "children's activities" and storytelling, but I have heard there may be ballet displays on the day. A roaring log fire will make the activity warm for the depth of winter and tea and coffee will be available.
Stangate House is located at 3 Edgeware Road, Aldgate. Entry into the house and garden costs $5/visitor and a cuppa and scones cost another $5.
The property was originally owned by Robert Thomas, who arrived in Australia in 1836. It was inherited by his great-great-granddaughter, Gwen Thomas, who married Reverend Raymond Cornish. The house was built for Gwen and Raymond in 1940 by J.B. Hughes.
Although there is a beautiful christening jacket on display in the function room cabinet, the Cornishes died leaving no children. They left the house to the National Trust of SA for us all to enjoy.
The house and gardens are well worth a visit. Apparently, Gwen's sister was a landscape gardener of some note, so the property is well planned. One particular room is called the "brides' room" because it is assigned as the dressing room for a bride when the garden is used for a wedding. This room also features a 1939 wedding dress, which is slightly pink in tone, in a glass display.
