After watching paddle boarders serenely paddle across Minnamurra River one weekend we decided we should give it a shot which is how we ended up at Bonnie Vale, in the Royal National Park, at 9am on Saturday.

Having no surf experience or core strength, it was decided it would be good to start with a lesson which we booked through Bundeena Kayaks . Our instructor quickly ran us through the basics (how to stand on the board, which way to face the paddle and how to avoiding being washed out to Cronulla) before we told we could carry our boards to the water.

We spent 30 minutes with the instructor as he guided us on how to paddle the board while on our knees, how to stand up and to remain balanced on the board. It was actually much easier than expected and soon we were all paddling standing up. At the end of the lesson, we reach a point where you can carry your board over a small sand bank to a very calm lagoon - a recommended practice spot for beginners. Carrying our board over the bank was actually the hardest part of the day.

Once in the lagoon, paddling is much easier and the current gently pushes you along. It was such a relaxing way to enjoy the water and take in the mangroves up close. The hour we were given to explore on our own quickly passes.

I would recommend the early start because it means you finish up before the sun becomes too strong and as a beginner, there are less people to navigate around.

Definitely a great way to spend the morning (and it didn't require much core strength!)
