Recently, one of my co-workers told me about her favourite cafe in Canberra: Stand By Me. She told me that she loved the French toast that they make there, as it is simply delicious and the flavour changes weekly. So on Saturday, I suggested to my partner that we visit this cafe, and expand our breakfast venues.
We arrived at the cafe about 10 and it was already busy with a group of people waiting outside for a table. It's not surprising that there was a wait as the cafe is popular but it is small and cosy with maybe 10 tables inside. However, I didn't mind that it was small, it made the space feel more cosy and welcoming, which is exactly what you want on a cold autumn morning.
Once we got a table, we were quickly given a menu by one of the friendly staff. The menu wasn't very long with only 10 breakfast options, but each of the options sounded delicious. Even though my co-worker recommended the French toast, I couldn't go past the Okonomiyaki. This menu option included a savoury pancake with shredded cabbage, pickled ginger, shallots, Tonkatsu sauce, Japanese mayo and a fried egg. As it was not something I have seen before on a menu, let alone a breakfast menu, I decided to give it a shot and try it out.
When the Okonomiyaki came out it was bright and colourful, which I loved. The pancake itself was full of flavour, due to the ginger and shallots. I liked the Tonkatsu sauce and the Japanese mayo, but I thought that there wasn't enough sauce, as the meal was a little dry.
