Picture this: a big night out. You've reached your limits of over-refreshment, and stumble around the streets looking for that oh-so-needed food fix to ease that grumbling stomach. Dear reader, you may have been in this situation before, and found yourself munching on a half-baked, terrible tasting souvlaki from a Greek van that will surely disappear the next day (from your memory, at least). Have you ever considered what that souvlaki would taste like if it was well done by one of Melbourne's oldest Greek eateries?
Well, now it's time for Stalactites. Operating from the same location for over 30 years, this well-placed Greek restaurant offers fantastically made Greek fare of all types, from spanakopitas to saganaki to souvlaki and beyond. And the best thing about this place? Open 24 hours, table service. Incredible.
Now, let's consider a different scenario. It's lunchtime, or dinner, and you're sober (or relatively so). Even still, Stalactites offers the same great food, except this time you'll be able to remember it.
Table service is a little slow during busy moments, but fret not, they will get around to you eventually. In the meantime, take a second or five to glance at the cool decor. A rough texture adorns all the walls, and the roof looks like it's actually growing stalactites. A nice touch, if a little over-the-top.
If you're looking to sit and enjoy a meal, get the lamb/chicken giro. Both, if you're hungry. Fresh meats are rolling and roasting, ready for the slicing. Plates piled high with meat are delivered to your table, adorned simply with a Greek salad and lemon wedges. Simply put, damn good food. Or if you're on the way home, or between venues, a souvlaki with the same giro meat will really hit the spot.
Be warned: late night revellers can make a mess of the place, and the late night service can be a little on the slow side. But for a really good sit down Greek meal at a late time, you can't go wrong. Stalactites is the place to be.
I have to agree - Stalactites is no less than damn good Greek food. And this is coming from a sober opinion. Last time I was there I had an open lamb souvlaki, the meat carved off the spit. The best part? It got so messy I ate with my hands, and noone batted and eyelid. I even licked my fingers! I suppose being open 24/7, that's certainly not the worst they see. Great for group gatherings, or take away after work, Stalactites gets a big thumbs up from me as well.
