It's supposed to be messy, it's a souvo
I'll let you in on a little secret of mine.

I have an unhealthy obsession with food.

What, you too? Fabulous! We're going to be great friends.

The thing is, the past three weeks has revolved around me saying the following to my partner (on repeat):

"I'm going to eat my way around Melbourne's best souvo shops, I'm going to visit 5 places and rate them all. I am going to eat so much amazing greek food and share the journey with everyone, it's going to be an experience like no other"

What can I say? I'm extremely intense when it comes to food, can you blame me? It brings out something so extraordinary in all of us and when it comes to sitting down for a meal that's beyond delicious I cannot be responsible for what I say, how I act or what I do.

Ladies and gentlemen, today was the beginning of my 'eat my way Greek, one souvo at a time' challenge and I'm here to tell you all the juicy details.

Where it all began

Stalactites is one of Melbourne's longest established & well known Greek restaurants and has been owned by the same Greek family since 1978 (incredible!). Having lived in Melbourne my whole life, I can certainly vouch for this restaurant being an institution for delicious, fast served greek cuisine. It's located at 177/183 Lonsdale St and is so easily accessible via public transport (or parking nearby)

Did I mention it's also smashed out some amazing awards?

Winner of the Dine Out Award in 2003
Winner of the Australian Achiever Awards in 2008 for "Best Greek Restaurant"
Victorian finalist in 2009 for the Australian Ethnic Business awards
Victorian finalist in 2010 for "Best Greek Restaurant" at the Restaurant and Catering awards
Victorian finalist Victorian finalist in 2011 for "Best Greek Restaurant" at the Restaurant and Catering awards
Victorian finalist/runner up in 2012 for "Best Greek Restaurant" at the Restaurant and Catering awards

Are you getting your diary out yet to plan a visit? You should be.

The menu is absolutely incredible and is loaded with that many options you will want to make this place a weekly hot spot (just so you can EAT IT ALL!)

Wait, there's more

Amazing, right?

I settled on eating the standard Lamb Souvlaki and included some chips (just for good measure). I wasn't disappointed at all and you won't be either. Here's some snaps I captured whilst devouring this treat:

How pretty does this Lamb Souvlaki look?

It looked so pretty when it arrived, that didn't last long!

What do I rate it out of 5? 4

Do yourself a favour and check this place out, go there with your friends, go there with your partner or on the weekend grab the family and make a night out of it. It's got great atmosphere, great staff and the food is just so finger licking good you'll have to wear your 'extra room' clothes to fit it all in!

Have you tried Kalimera Souvalaki Art in Oakleigh? If you're going to eat yourself Greek, then that's a woncderful place to go as well.
