From March to October the natural phenomenon, 'Staircase to the Moon', occurs in the Kimberley and the Pilbra. For around three nights a month, when the tides are extremely low, the moon reflects off the mudflats, creating the illusion of a 'stairway to the moon'. It truly is a magical sight and for those of you who haven't experienced this amazing occurrence, why not take the dates of this must-see event into consideration for your next trip to the North-west. I have included a list of the visitor's centres in the North-west so travellers can check when the staircase to the moon will be in the upcoming months.

Broome is a popular spot to watch this extraordinary movement of the tides and subsequent reflection off the mud flats. Town Beach is a well known location, not only for viewing the staircase to the moon but also because of the night markets that are held there. Anywhere around Roebuck Bay though is good 'staircase' viewing. The first staircase to the moon in Broome will occur on the 28th March at 6.30p.m.

What to bring? Make sure your bring your camera! A picnic blanket and a couple of chairs and of course some vino to toast the moment!

Enjoy this truly wonderful, magic sight...
