Male Burlesque - What could be better?
The Stage Door Johnnies are coming to town. Hot of the press from the USA they are the world's only all male burlesque troupe and the "Best Group" winners of the 2011 Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas. Complete with comedy, live singing, dancing and all kinds of sexy creative sparks along the way this is one show you won't want to miss.
Meet Jett Adore, Ray Gunn and Bazuka Joe
The Stage Door Johnnies have already taken Australia by storm trotting out their hotness in Newcastle, Canberra, Perth and Melbourne. They've even made an appearance on Channel 9's "Mornings," smoking up the TV studio in style. What more could you expect from an all male burlesque troupe ranked as one of the top 10 performers in the world by 21st Century Burlesque.
Best Group Winner at the Burlesque Hall of Fame 2011
This time around it's definitely the ladies waiting to meet The Stage Door Johnnies. But don't think you can't bring blokes to this show, there's something for everyone. Along with the Johnnies is the stunning MC Nadine DuBois full of vintage glamour and charm, and The Schlep Sisters, Minnie Tonka, and Darlinda Just Darlinda, full of slap schtick humour, sexiness and just the right amount of sass .
I had the opportunity to speak to Bazuka Joe, one of the Stage Door Johnnies. Joe said while they love performing for American audiences touring in Australia has been incredible, the sexy trio love the Australian sense of humour and enthusiasm for a good time. He told me to let the Sydney crowd know to be ready for a rockin' good time with The Stage Door Johnnies.
I asked Joe where they get their inspiration from for their unique acts. He said burlesque icons as Gypsy Rose and Betty Page have inspired them as well as modern day male burlesque performers such as Tigger, Evil Hate Monkey and Hot Toddy. Of course Joe said they have been incredibly influenced by "Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire, and the Rat Pack - all of whom have incredible polish, stage presence, and were icons of their day."
Surprisingly, Joe said they fell into burlesque by accident. The Johnnies were all doing back up gigs for other performers when Hot Toddy (winner of Mr .Exotic World 2009) approached them to create their own Burlesque troupe. Little did they know he had already booked a gig for them. They had to have their personas, solos and photo shoots done within two weeks. Lucky for us that accident happened. How else would we get the chance to see the world's best male burlesque troupe?
Don't miss the chance to see The Stage Door Johnnies next Friday 26th October at The Factory Theatre in Marrickville. Let your imagination run wild, back to the vaudeville days with a 21st century spin...
