Saint Patrick's Day, otherwise known as the Feast of Saint Patrick, draws out the Irish in Toowoomba each year for the St Patrick's Day parade. The wearing o' the green was all around for an easy march from the
Irish Club , down Victoria St to Margaret St, then Ruthven to Russell Sts and back to the Irish Club.
At the head of the parade, an Irish town crier, followed by St Patrick, then flags of Ireland and their corresponding diversity; the Darling Downs Irish Club, Irish harp, the Irish Republic, the Prussian Armed Bird and Erin go Bragh Descendants and others. With a full and stirring sound, the
Toowoomba Caledonian Society Pipe Band kept things marching along, with Irish pipers bringing up the rear. It was a cheerful and sprightly atmosphere.
Toowoomba is a long way from Dublin where St Patrick's Day is a public holiday, but the Irish of the populace here are also passionate about their heritage. St Patrick lived from 385 - 461AD and his life has been celebrated since the early 17th century. As the patron saint of Ireland, he was famous for teaching on the Trinity using a three-leafed Shamrock. St Patrick's Day is on the day he is said to have died, 17 March.
You don't need to be Irish to join the Darling Downs Irish Club. If you're interested in Irish culture, you'll be welcome to join in 'The Shenanigans'. Contact 07 4639 8926.
Continuing the celebrations this year, traditional Irish music played from 10am at the 'Silly Sunday Sesh', until live music at the Michael Collins Bar began with old-time rock 'n roll. It wasn't too early for a Guinness, or 'pint of Gat' for many and families played bottle top games at the booths. A fun crowd got the partying off to an early start. The Irish Club serves a fabulous lunch and the atmosphere is uplifting. There are to be 'cheeky specials' all day. At 6pm, Craic Piper will provide additional entertainment.
If you missed it, don't forget to don your Leprechaun hat next year and have a taste of Guinness at the Irish Club for St Patrick's Day 2021.
