There will be craic agus ceoil (that's Gaelic for fun and music) galore in Sydney on Sunday 21st March for the annual St Patricks Day parade and celebrations. To be sure, to be sure! And you don't have to be Irish to enjoy the day.

The Irish have been celebrating St. Patrick's Day in Australia since March 17th, 1810, when Governor Lachlan Macquarie declared the date an official day of celebration for the Irish and those of Irish heritage. And 200 years later, the Irish are still marking their Patron Saint's day with an annual street parade and a family day on the third Sunday of March.

A sea of green with each County of Ireland represented, the parade leaves at noon from the corner of Town Hall on George Street and Bathurst Street, continuing to Park Street and around Elizabeth Street, ending at Hyde Park near St. James Station. The fun continues after the parade with the Family Day in Hyde Park.

There'll be something for everyone, with a main stage playing host to many entertainers from musicians to Irish dancers. A colourful interactive children's area will keep the kids amused while the big kids enjoy a glass of Guinness or a cup of tea, along with traditional Irish fare and snacks.

You'll be amazed at the fantastic line up on the main stage this year, including Jimmy Moore with his Irish folk band Claddagh, who kick off the entertainment at 12.30pm. You can then kick up your heels with a few jigs and reels as Irish dancers take to the stage.

All that dancing is thirsty work, so you might have time between acts to grab a drop of the good old black stuff before Dublin based but Sydney born singer/songwriter Rory Faithfield performs. The West Australian newspaper described his music as "beautiful, straightforward storytelling, saturated in Irish folk traditions, but with a keen edge born of Faithfield's days as a punk rocker in Sydney".

You'll have to find a spot to sit on the grass and enjoy the sounds of well known Irish singer Eleanor McEvoy, who is touring Australia at the moment. There are plenty of other acts too including For Folk Sake, No Messin and Blackwater.
