The best long lunch experience in the Barossa

Spring is here but sadly the weather has not caught up yet. Despite the rain, I still spent a day in the Barossa and had a long leisurely lunch at St Hugo winery.

With absolutely no regrets, we had an amazing time and could not fault a thing! We felt the warmth in the room as soon as we walked in, as well as the warm greeting from the manager who took us to our table. The views at St Hugo winery are second to none with floor to ceiling glass walls, even on a dreary day.

Most of the ingredients were grown on site to give you the freshest and most organic produce available. To start was a complimentary house made crisp with beetroot hummus and pickled cucumber to get our appetite going.

For entree, we opted for pappardelle with broccoli, beurre noisette and almond crumb. The house made pappardelle was perfectly al dente. When combined with simple ingredients, the dish allowed the balanced flavour and pasta to shine.

Our other entree was smoked tommy ruff with sourdough bread. Again, a faultless dish. It's very nice to see a different fish on offer from the menu. The combination of lightly toasted garlic sourdough, tommy, blistered tomato and oregano oil in a mouthful was a delight to eat.

For the main, we didn't want something heavy so we chose roast pumpkin with tahini labneh, pepitas and herb salad. With a perfect balance of herbs and spices, this vegetarian dish wowed my taste buds. Not only the seasoning was perfect, but the silky soft pumpkin paired with crunchy pepitas and curry leaves also gave the perfect texture overall.

We had fried cauliflower with tahini dressing to couple with the pumpkin. Although it was the same tahini dressing as the pumpkin, it definitely did not make eating the two dishes together boring. In fact, they complemented each other very well.

To extend our stay a little longer because we enjoyed it so much, we ordered the chocolate pudding with orange tuille and dulce de leche. It was soft, moist, sweet and crunchy. Just heavenly delectable.

Although we were accidentally vegetarian / pescatarian, this was one of the best lunch experiences I've had. It's quite rare to be able to enjoy not only exceptional food but also the service and ambience. We will definitely come back for more - hopefully soon to enjoy their current spring menu.

It's wonderful to see fine dining options like this all over the contry. Australia has come such a long way over the last few decades.

I’ve eaten there too, and the food was fantastic as was the wine. Highly recommend. And now this article has made me want to go back there soon
