The Magill rd shopfront
St. Georges Bakehouse took home the 2011 National Pie Competition for their chunky beef pie, and it's easy to understand why they have won a swag of other awards as well. The bakery commenced in 1989 on Portrush Road at Linden Park. Outgrowing the premises in 2008, St. Georges expanded to include its current location at 400 Magill Road, Kensington Park (which opened in January 2009).

The interior
The spacious, modern interior at 400 Magill Rd seats around 25 people, there is also outside dining under shady umbrellas which seats 12. The quality, value for money and cleanliness are the things that impress me most about this bakery. St Georges make a wide variety of pies; including large family pies and quiches to take away.

The impressive cake display
The huge glass display cabinet also boasts a large assortment of cakes, slices, danishes and scrolls, all at pretty reasonable prices for the size and quality. St. Georges also has a sandwich bar where they make a variety of fresh rolls, sandwiches or baguettes with quality fillings that you would expect from any good deli.

The chicken pie with chunky meat and flaky pastry. The vanilla slice was huge.
I live only a stone's throw away, so this place is one of my regular haunts. Their pies are arguably the best in Adelaide with real chunks of meat, the pasties, kranskies and quiches are also delicious. Today I opted for the chicken pie and a tasty vanilla slice (filled with firm custard and a crisp pastry base). I walked away full and satisfied after only being $8 lighter in the pocket. I am not sure if I have tried a better vanilla slice anywhere.

An array of kids treats are on offer
If you are just after a hot drink the coffee beans are grown in certified organic plantations, and an assortment of teas are also available. With ample parking out the back, and kid friendly options, St. Georges Bakehouse is a welcome stop along Magill Rd for breakfast, lunch or just coffee.
