Every year, opens its door to those interested in Anglican Church history during South Australia's History Festival and this May 2022 was no different. Guided tours were led by knowledgeable volunteers who very generously gave up their time to show us around the church.

Back in the 1870s when Semaphore was developing into a more liveable place, the need for its own church became apparent. A 300-seater building was eventually constructed, but with worship services attracting hundreds of people, an extension was on the horizon and soon both transepts and a nave were added.

Beautiful stained glass windows were also installed throughout the years. Among others, the resurrection window would have to be one of my favourites. Its purple cross and Easter lily in the centre of the window depict death and renewed life while its blue hues in the upper part suggest a heavenly vision. Burial bandages left behind when Christ was resurrected can be seen winding across the top too.

The church is home to one of Josiah Eustace Dodd's pipe organs. Although born in Victoria, Dodd made Adelaide his base of operation and built some substantial instruments for a number of South Australian churches. His organs have been known to be not only of exquisite workmanship but also light to the touch and easy to play.

An Honour Board hanging proudly on the wall lists the names of those who had suffered and were lost during World War I. Their stories continue to be treasured by the church. On a lighter note, two candlesticks and a crucifix from the former St Francis House for inland Aboriginal children have now been placed in the chapel within the church building.

Outside, towards the northeastern corner, is a memorial garden for the burial of ashes. A war memorial wall also runs down to the front of the church. Its stones came from Le Fevre Peninsula Primary School which had long been demolished.

With assistance from the local council, a community garden has been established on the southern side of the church to help pull down the barrier of isolation and nurture the wellbeing of its diverse participants. The garden opens to the public on Thursdays.

is located at 200 Military Road in Semaphore. Do look out for their open day next year if you're interested in a guided tour of the church.
