Everybody loves springtime. After the short cold days of winter it's invigorating to once again feel the warmth of the sunshine and appreciate the multicoloured bloom of flowers in our local parks and gardens.

Something that I also enjoy about spring is the great variety of fairs and fetes that are held around the Newcastle region. Generally organised as fundraisers for schools and churches, they invoke images of simpler times, when communities would selflessly work together for a common cause and children would count down the days to the big event with eager anticipation.

One of the first of the events to be held this spring will be the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Spring Fair . Built in 1890 by the Presbyterian community of Newcastle and situated right next to beautiful Civic Park, St. Andrew's church is one of Newcastle's best-known architectural landmarks. Fairs at the church have been enjoyed by generations of Novacastrians, and this year's event is sure to be no exception, with heaps of affordable family fun organised and several really cool market stalls.

[ADVERT]This year's Spring Fair will be held on Saturday 31st August from 9am until 1pm. Various stalls will be situated around the church's grounds selling cakes, jams, plants, pre-loved clothing and much, much more. Old-time favourites such as a White Elephant Stall and handicrafts (including hand-knitted baby clothes, hand-towels and crocheted coat-hanger covers) will also be part of the festivities, so if you're nostalgic for all things vintage and retro, try to pop over for a quick browse.

For the children there's face-painting, and if you're hungry, morning teas and light lunches can also be purchased. Alternatively, if you simply want to be entertained, you can enjoy a performance by the Hunter Singers at 11am for a gold-coin donation.

In a nutshell, this year's St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church Spring Fair promises to be a fun, affordable and family-orientated day out, so be sure to mark it into your social calendar. It also supports a good cause, and all proceeds from the event go towards supporting the church and its various community outreach programs.
