St. Alexander's Kitchen

St.Alexander's Kitchen has become a hit in the northern suburbs, albeit you wouldn't guess from its dingy shopfront. Located on a tiny strip of everyday shops including Foodworks, it would be easy to walk straight by without ever noticing this treasure.

These first impressions are blown aside as you enter a world of cute, vintage and grungy decor such as wooden-looking tables and chairs, paintings that look like they came straight from the Renaissance and street signs.

On weekdays, they are known as an excellent pizza and pasta place, all homemade. On weekends, they are also known for their exceptional brunch dishes, and during our morning visit last time we even witnessed them making their pizza dough, demonstrating the authenticity of their homely business.

I'm yet to try their their pizza and pasta but I can vouch for their beautifully presented breakfast dishes and addictive coffee. As can my friend, who even ordered a second latte. Feeling all sorts of inspiration, the details of their old-school feel was even represented in their teaspoons, which looked like they came from an English teaparty but on closer inspection represented Australian places such as Mildura.

Their dishes range from the classic eggs benedict to various omelettes. I tried the 'Shakshuka' (scrambled eggs, pastrami, cheese and tomato), which was so artfully garnished it would be worthy of the same attention that any busy, inner suburbs place gets. You will find their dishes are often stacked high and generous, and of course very tasty.

On the second occasion, I realised they had a specials board, so went with a Spanish omelette whilst my friend had the 'Hangover Breakfast'. You can feel their Italian and European influences in their dishes, with various types of flavour added from their ingredients such as spices and relishes.

The far northern suburbs are currently lacking the brunch gems that areas such as Preston and Fitzroy have, thus this spot is gradually becoming known.

The only downside is that they don't have EFTPOS facilities. There is an ATM in Foodworks next door and they even let us both go out to go withdraw, although in the end we paid them in lots of coins, which they were nice about!

They also have a outside area at the back, which has a different feel as it is a small area completely covered in graffiti art. I'm hoping to drop by again in the summer to enjoy and a meal at the back and also to try their dinner menu and their desserts (such as their Eton mess and tiramisu!)
