Located on the corner of Payneham Road and OG Road,
St Aidan's Anglican Church boasts a wonderful interior with many significant features.
Its main stained glass window depicts St Aidan dressed in a robe complete with red gloves and the Bishop's ring, Christ the King knocking on a door while holding a lantern, and King Oswald a good friend of St Aidan. Next to the window is a timber-framed picture of Christ as the man of sorrows on his way to Calvary.
The church's pipe organ most likely reflects the work of Fincham & Hobday. It came from St Augustine's in 1931. Its chamber was dedicated to the memory of Revd JC Haynes. A couple of years later, the archway was opened and dummy pipes were fitted. This greatly improved the organ's performance.
A wooden panel can be seen covering the wall at the back of the altar. On it are two carvings - growing wheat and a grapevine with grapes - illustrating the sacramental bread and wine of the Eucharist. The large cross serves as a reminder of Christ's death while the triple brass candlesticks represent his human and divine natures. White-coloured curtains were in use when we visited, but they do change according to the colour of the church seasons. To the right, you'll find a small side table where the communion elements and alms plate are placed.
The baptistry font is placed near the entrance to the church. Behind it stands another stained glass window depicting the baptism of Christ. Looking around, I also noticed many colourful tapestry kneelers along the pews which simply add to the ambience.
Lastly, there's a memorial garden outside by the sanctuary wall. Ashes have been interred in this secluded area and the people's names are recorded in a memorial register stored at the back of the church.
