The 2014 Sydney Craft Beer Week is fast approaching, with this year's event running over 9 days (18-26 October). Featuring over 100 events in venues from Marrickville to Manly, one may find it difficult deciding what to put into the calendar!

This article features a suggestion for a number of 'free' tap-takeover events. For those new to the craft beer ranks, a tap-takeover is where a venue clears out its beer lines and throws its taps to the mercy of a single brewer. Quite often the event may even feature a representative from the brewery itself to guide you through the varying offerings. Note that the word free is in inverted commas – entry may be free but you still need to pay for the beer!

If you survive opening night on Saturday 18th October, the first of the tap-takeovers begins on the Sunday. Starting at 2:00pm, iconic Harts Pub will be showcasing brews from Doctors Orders and Dennis Beer Co . This could be branded as a competition of who has the zaniest names for their beers! Some of the drops from Dennis Beer Co include Rocket Science Galactic Ale (a dark amber American pale ale) and The Halo of Saturn Hop Behemoth (a whopping 8.0% double IPA). Staying true to their brand name, all of the Doctor's Orders beers have some medical connotation. Their current seasonal lineup presents ales such as the Prescription 12 Black IPA, the Defibrillator Weizen Doppelbock and Plasma White IPA.

Venture out west towards gentrified Newtown and you'll find a presentation of Southern Coast breweries at the Union Hotel. With four breweries (Shark Island, Black Rock, Illawarra Brewing and Hop Dog) pouring across 20 taps, you're bound to find a drop that pleases your tastebuds. In addition to the beers you'll also be treated to live music and a host of raffle giveaways from the brewers.

Stuck working over the weekend or have a hatred for Mondays? The fun continues during the week. If you fancy a tipple on Monday night you could head down to The Hive Bar in Erskinville. The local taps there will be populated with delights from Shenanigans Brewing. Of the four taps, two will be newly released beers so make sure you get down to be one of the first to try! Festivities kick off from 2pm if you can slip out from work early. . .

On Tuesday, Trinity Bar in Surry Hills is featuring one of Australia's longest serving craft breweries – Feral from Western Australia. The night will get rolling at 6pm and will be starring a number of live music performances. Be sure to try what is largely revered as Australia's best IPA – Feral Hop Hog. Weighing it at a sessionable 5.8%, Hop Hog is a staple go to beer which can be found in many venues. Also a great introductory IPA for anyone who is new to the style.

Bitter Phew is one of the hottest new bars to grace Oxford Street. On Wednesday the 22nd October, they will be headlining with a tap-takeover of a slightly different variety. Instead of showcasing a discrete brewer, this takeover will be by style. If you like Feral Hop Hog from the night before, then you may be ready for this one! The Monster IPA tap-takeover will be bursting with hops and IBU's (international bitterness units – a measure of how bitter a beer is).
