Squire's loft describe themselves as the 'Steak specialists' and they aptly own that title. First opened in 1992 in Church Street Brighton its popularity saw the flagship store open on Toorak Road in South Yarra, which is the restaurant I visited.
The restaurant has a South African influence throughout the menu with a focus on meat dishes perfectly grilled. The entrees include such specialties as Borewors, a spicy South African farm sausage, Chicken fillet kebabs, Lamb loin chops and baked mushroom and feta.
The mains on offer give emphasis to meat with rump, porterhouse, scotch fillet, rib eye on the bone, T bone, pork spare ribs (when available), lamb chops, chicken breast and both angus porterhouse and eye fillet. Vegetarians are likewise spoiled with a platter of grilled and basted pumpkin alongside two kebabs of mushroom, capsicum, and fried onions.
All mains are basted with Squires baste that has a hint of BBQ and the tang of vinegar and delicate spices and your choice of thick cut fries or a baked potato. Steaks are cooked to order and can on request be accompanied by a sauce of your choice including mushroom, black pepper; mustard, BBQ, creamy garlic, green pepper, Danish blue cheese and Squires baste.
Additional salads and a variety of side orders are also on offer as well as a simple but traditional dessert menu including hot chocolate fudge cake, warm sticky date pudding and an Australian cheese platter.
Beverages include a wide variety of wines, cider and sodas as well as coffees including the choice of soy and skinny milk.
My family and I attended the Toorak road store for my father's birthday after booking a few days prior for a table of six. Unfortunately I can't tell you if they make a fuss on birthdays as my Dad swore us to secrecy. The meal, however, was nothing short of incredible. Even for a couple I would recommend booking for weekend dining as this place gets quite busy.
Among us we ordered three eye fillets, two Angus Porterhouse and one vegetarian meal. The sauces we chose were BBQ, green pepper and black pepper. The steaks were cooked exactly to order and our tastes all varied. From well done with gorgeous grill marks, juicy medium rare and the vegetables with the same perfect grill marks all perfectly cooked, juicy and tasty and an extremely large portion – I felt spoilt.
The sauces were all incredible with sticky sweet BBQ and tangy, spicy pepper sauces. We also chose both English and grain mustard as an additional accompaniment with the English mustard giving quite a kick. The baked potato was fantastic and moist and the chips were meaty inside and crisp on the outside.
There was a bit of a wait for our meals to arrive but all was completely forgotten with the taste. The restaurant is very busy and our order was quite large.
With six stores now open throughout Melbourne and more to come – Squires loft definitely owns their specialty.
